Halfway to Devon Place he had to pull his pair to a halt and jump down, where he retched in the bushes. He hadn’t asked, and didn’t know, precisely what they’d meant by attacked. The possibilities careening through his head caused his hands to sweat and his stomach to twist. His heart pounded and pulsed excessively, and what felt like panic had begun to stiffen his muscles. What had happened to his beautiful wife while he’d been off exorcising the demons in his head? He prayed that Ellen had had the opportunity to send a note, but nevertheless, he would head for London in the morning. It was her closest and most likely destination, and he had the townhouse there to take her to if she ever forgave him.

He’d damn well prostrate himself at her feet, though he couldn’t imagine she’d appreciate the gesture.

Devon Place was better lit than Peter expected when he turned the phaeton into the drive. Lined with well-spaced conker trees, the gravel drive ended at the low ivy-covered wall that had surrounded the main house and garden for centuries. The gates had long since been removed, but the demarcation was clear. Past the gate, the drive was covered with gray macadam to complement the Palladian façade of the house.

Instead of dark, the front hall, drawing room and dining room were all lit, as well as the upper gallery.

Peter’s eyes narrowed, but he knew better than to think Mrs. Inglebright and Mr. Grady would have allowed anything nefarious to happen under his roof. Behind him on the tiger’s seat, his majordomo Robin—who often traveled with Peter—grunted. “Looks like they’re expecting us!” Peter called back.

“Aye, or someone’s visiting,” the long-time retainer agreed. He’d been Peter’s batman in Portugal and Spain and had simply stayed with Peter when they’d returned to England.

Peter nodded but his stomach clenched. There were very few people in his life that he would have invited to stay at Devon Place and most of those were related to his wife. Dear Lord, who else knew of this debacle? If someone had come expecting to visit, Grady may very well have invited them to stay overnight rather than sending them off to a country inn. But Peter wasn’t going to entertain, not anyone.

A groom came running to take charge of the horses and phaeton, while Peter ran up the steps, already plotting how to remove the interloper from his house and get on with packing for an extended trip.

A footman took his greatcoat, cane and hat. “Who’s here?” Peter asked bluntly. He vaguely recognized the servant, but didn’t know his name. He only knew those of the three senior staff who he spoke to most frequently. This one was most frequently found removing his dinner trays from the library.

The footman’s eyes widened, and he swallowed, turning away to set aside the garments. “Ah, sir,” he began.

“Cut line, man,” Peter demanded. “Who else is in the house?”

From behind him, a voice interrupted, firm and intensely feminine.
